William A. Murphy, Jr., M.D.

Dr. William Murphy is a professor of Diagnostic Radiology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He holds the John S. Dunn, Sr. Distinguished Chair in Diagnostic Imaging.

Dr. Murphy was recruited to MD Anderson in 1993 to lead the Diagnostic Imaging division. As division head, and prior to relinquishing administrative responsibilities in 2000, he guided considerable growth in space, faculty, staff, clinical volume and programs in education and research. He contributed to many of MD Anderson’s strategic plans, including those involving product development, marketing, outreach, managed care, building expansion (the addition of nearly 1 million square feet of new space) and revenue growth to more than $1 billion. Application of best practices helped the division and MD Anderson adapt to significant changes in the delivery and funding of academic health care.

Dr. Murphy chaired the Finance Committee within his physician group practice and served as chief operating officer ad interim in addition to his appointments in radiology. For 23 years, he has been a board member of the MD Anderson Physicians Network, a 501(a) company responsible for community outreach through oncology management contracts. For the last 18 years, he has served as board chair.

Before joining MD Anderson, Dr. Murphy was a professor of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis and co-director of Musculoskeletal Radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine. Responsible for all forms of musculoskeletal and breast imaging, he supervised peripheral vascular imaging for more than a decade and directed the clinical startup of MRI in 1983. He and his colleagues made important contributions to the initial definition of musculoskeletal applications in both MRI and CT imaging.

A long-time member of the Radiological Society of North America, Dr. Murphy completed a three year appointment as chairman of the society’s Program Committee and was its first vice president in 1997. He has served on many journal editorial boards and has authored or co-authored more than 400 articles, book chapters, abstracts and exhibits. He is regularly recognized as a distinguished reviewer of scientific manuscripts and widely known for his academic contributions to metabolic bone disease, arthritis, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, oncology, CT and MRI applications, forensic radiology and paleoradiology. He has lectured worldwide and has been honored as a fellow in both the American College of Radiology and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.

Dr. Murphy’s career also has included consulting with the St. Louis city medical examiner. He helped enhance the discipline of forensic radiology, and his interest in forensic science and human identification led to pursuit of imaging applications in paleopathology. He participated in the scientific investigation of The Iceman, a 5,300-year-old mummy released from a glacier in 1991.

Dr. Murphy is a graduate of The University of Pittsburgh and earned his medical degree in the inaugural class of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
